Recently, I’ve developed a keen interest in Shiseido products, and my latest obsession led me to explore the Shiseido Ultimune Hand Cream. I got this right before winter, and as spring may be just around the corner I thought it was time to give you my thoughts and experience.
Shiseido | Ultimune Power Infusing Hand Cream 75ml
In the expansive world of skincare, hand care often takes a backseat to facial regimens although hands are one of the first places to show signs of aging. As we enter our thirties, the aging process becomes more pronounced, prompting a desire to elevate our skincare routines. Just as I’ve evolved my facial skincare regimen to include products that offer more than just hydration, I’ve also started to look for hand creams with additional benefits.
Last year, I experimented with Nécessaire’s The Hand Cream (review here), intrigued by its inclusion of peptides. While I found the effects of the formula to be somewhat underwhelming, it didn’t deter me from exploring other hand creams with anti-aging properties.
Enter: Shiseido’s Ultimune hand cream. 💁🏻♀️ Intrigued by the excellence of Shiseido’s Ultimune line, I decided to explore their hand cream, enriched with their “ImuGenerationRED,” a proprietary blend of botanical extracts. Nourishing one’s hands beyond just locking in hydration.
My Experience
Scent and Texture
Let’s start off talking about the scent of the Shiseido Ultimune hand cream, as it is perhaps the most prevailing feature. Reminiscent of other products in the Ultimune line, the scent of the Ultimune hand cream does take it a notch further. I’d say that the fragrance is moderate to quite strong. I love the top notes, however, I’ve noticed that at times, the base notes of the scent (particularly in the hand cream) remind me a lot of tobacco or “snuff/snus” 👀 which ends up being my biggest gripe with this product.
It’s a peculiar note that may not appeal to everyone’s olfactory preferences. Not to mention, if you’re sensitive to scent, this one may not be for you. Though, if you love a fragrant product, you won’t be disappointed.
In terms of texture, the hand cream surprises with its gel-cream texture. What distinguishes the Ultimune Hand Cream from other hand creams is its formulation, which contains barely any lipids. Yet, it feels nourishing and long lasting. Compared to the Clinique Deep Comfort Hand and Cuticle Cream I used before (not bad, especially if you’re looking for a scentless hand cream!), the texture of the Shiseido hand cream feels lighter, which I personally prefer. However, depending on the amount used, the hand cream may leave a slightly tacky feeling on the hands, especially if applied generously. Otherwise, I find it to absorb well, leaving my hands feeling soft and nourished throughout the day.
Packaging and Size
The Shiseido Ultimune Hand Cream comes in a sleek flat tube design that is optimal for squeezing out the last few dollops. At 75 ml, it comes at a relatively high price point, but a little goes a long way. I usually use about a pea-sized amount for both hands and find it’s enough – making it a cost-effective option in the long run.
Effectiveness and Benefits
Beyond its sensory allure, the true test of any skincare product lies in its efficacy. I must say that the Shiseido Ultimune Hand Cream delivers on its promises! Hands look instantly more nourished and youthful looking. My hands have become so soft and also feel protected against environmental stressors (like a soft long-lasting veil over them). I’ve found that I require less frequent moisturization throughout the day, which has prompted me to favor this over the conventional drugstore hand creams I’ve previously purchased.
I can’t judge the well-aging benefits of the botanical proprietary blend, but I like that it’s in there. But you know what, I do find the skin on the back of my hands to be more resilient against any scratches my devil cat makes. 😅
I’ve also found it to have a positive effect on my cuticles. However, I attribute part of my reduced dryness this winter to switching to a more hydrating soap from Dove – a tip for anyone looking to tackle dryness from different angles.
Conclusion
What I appreciate most about this hand cream is that it isn’t just about moisture; it also contains some well-aging ingredients, which is what drew me in.
Would I repurchase the Shiseido Ultimune Hand Cream? Yes! Although I may react to the base notes reminding me of a scent I don’t particularly like, the effectiveness of this hand cream is one of the best I’ve experienced. I’ve yet to try a product from Shiseido that I didn’t like. They are truly sensorial experts when it comes to texture, feel, and results!
