With the on-going acne scar treatments, I felt the need to invest in a proper sunscreen for the face. So far I’ve been using one for the body from Eco Cosmetics, that I bought for the men to use when working outside in the summer. However, it’s far too sticky, leaves a white cast, and only has protection against UVB. From what I’ve heard, the formula of physical sunscreens has come a far way, and there’s was no better time to try one out!
MyChelle | Sunscreen SPF 28 Unscented
★★★☆☆
Skin type: Normal to Oily
EDIT: Since I wrote this review my mind has changed about this sunscreen and I’ve had to remove two stars. Comparing it to other sunscreens, this one has too much of a rubbery feel that doesn’t let the skin breathe – especially in hot and humid conditions. When going out for a run with it on, I end up sweating through my nose and the sides. It feels very uncomfortable and makes me feel yucky. Luckily it still doesn’t seem to break me out much, but unfortunately, it’s kind of useless if my face can’t get warm with it.
I haven’t been using any sun protection in two years, except for that sunscreen that’s called “common sense”. Meaning: big hats, clothing, and staying in the shade during peak hours. On my face I’ve been using raspberry seed oil and some carrot seed oil. Most facial sunscreens has broken me out or felt heavy, and knowing so much about sun health, I just developed this avoidance towards SPF’s as I run out of vitamin D pretty quickly. In other words, I’m a child of the sun but I respect the sun’s powers.
However, I’m not so extreme to not understand the importance of sun protection when you’re going through invasive skin treatments!
I researched some natural sunscreens and settled for keeping inline with the MyChelle-theme I got going right now. I was deciding between this one or the Replenish Solar Defense SPF 30, but I was also looking at the Devita Solar Protective Moisturizer SPF 30+. In the end I went with MyChelle unscented SPF 28 as based on the reviews it was lighter. The MyChelle SPF 30 may be a great addition in the winter, or for those with dry skin, as it works great alone. However I wanted something that could be on top of my moisturizer without feeling heavy.
This sunscreen is equipped with ZinClear™ which is supposed to not leave a white cast. On the picture above, you barely see it where blended out. However many reviewers and even I can agree upon, that it sometimes may leave a slight white cast… sometimes. I usually wait to apply sunscreen just before I know I’m going outside. Because as you may know, the protection of sunscreen wears off after two-three hours. And even though, this one feels decent on my face, it’s still like wearing make up or a pair of jeans, I’d like to take it off as soon as I can. But be sure to apply it with somewhat damp fingers/face for best result. Sometimes my boyfriend has noticed a “white line”, but usually it’s been due to me putting sunscreen on top of sunscreen. However, that’s what you should do if you’re going out twice!
Nonetheless, it’s probably the best natural sunscreen I’ve used and it doesn’t seem to cause me any pimples – even when layered twice! But I’m very thorough when washing it off as usually it’s not the sunscreen that causes me to break out, but the build up as they are very hard to wash off.
I’m very happy with my purchase. It may leave your skin a bit too matte in my opinion as I like the more dewy-look. Then there’s this common thread that I’ve noticed with MyChelle face creams, leaving your skin feeling a bit rubbery. Not in a bad way! Just saying that when using oils your skin feels like your skin, but when using creams your skin feels like it has something on, you know? Just my personal preference.
Then I’ve seen a few reviews giving this one bad points for containing alcohol. They must be referring to the old formula, I can tell you that the new formula does not contain any drying alcohol.
The packaging is great, and you can squeeze out just the right amount. I can definitely see myself repurchasing this! And on a second thought, it might be good that it’s matte, because my face gets a bit oily and congested in the summer.
