Last Christmas, I received the Amika Dream Routine Overnight Hydration Treatment in the Mask-Topia mask set. I was super excited to try it out, as I had been searching for a hair product that would nourish my fragile ends and prevent split ends overnight. Previously, I tried the cult classic 8H Overnight Serum from Kerastase but found it didn’t live up to its promises for my hair. I hoped that Amika’s Dream Routine would be better.
Amika Dream Routine Overnight Treatment
According to Amika, the Dream Routine Overnight Hydration Treatment is designed to provide deep hydration and nourishment while you sleep, leaving hair soft, shiny, and more manageable by morning. Key ingredients include:
- Hyaluronic Acid: Hydrates and retains moisture in the hair.
- Blue Tansy Oil: Known for its calming and healing properties.
- Sea Buckthorn: Rich in vitamins and antioxidants to strengthen and protect hair.
My Experience
I found that a little goes a long way, needing only about 2 pumps for each side of my waist-long hair, focusing on my dry ends.
Initially, I liked this product better than the Kerastase Nutritive 8H Overnight Serum. However, I also found it not as softening and hydrating as I had imagined. I quickly learned it was important to braid my hair after applying it. Without braiding, my hair felt dry, (not greasy, but) overloaded with product, and frizzy—the opposite of what it promised. But by braiding my hair and leaving it for a couple of hours, my hair felt soft, shiny, and more manageable; living up to its claims.
I experimented with various ways of using this treatment: overnight, on dry hair, on wet hair, after washing, and as a treatment. But any way I used it, the best effect was on dry or damp hair and leaving it in a protective hairstyle.
The product has a moderately strong scent in my opinion. I can’t speak for everyone, but I found it to be a nice and tolerable fragrance.
Conclusion
While the Amika Dream Routine Overnight Hydration Treatment has its merits, it’s not drastically different from the Kerastase 8H Overnight Serum. Both required me to braid my hair to achieve the desired results, which is a bit uncomfortable for me as I don’t like sleeping in braids or any “protective hairstyle.” This often led to me using the product during the day instead. Despite this, I still prefer it slightly over the Kerastase serum, as it’s cheaper. However, considering the fine line between achieving the claimed results and experiencing the opposite, I’m unsure if I would repurchase it or any similar product of this kind again. I can’t tell if it’s damage or low porosity, but my hair doesn’t seem to do well with this type of product. If anything I much more prefer the Closer Instant Repair Cream from Amika.
